This city's location on the shores of Lake Erie has shaped its destiny and development. Where there is water, there is industry and commerce. (And some fun outdoor sports!) In the post-industrial era, the city lost much of its manufacturing muscle -- though it still has a solid industrial base, with General Electric and Plastek Industries included in the area's top employers. As with many former industrial giants,Pennsylvania's third-largest city (behind Philadelphiaand Pittsburgh), turned to tourism to fill the void. A concerted effort has transformed Erie into a popular vacation and recreation destination, anchoring its charms in the Lake Erie waterfront. The Presque Isle peninsula dips its toes far out intothe fresh lake waters, and Presque Isle State Park,Pennsylvania's most popular state park, offers theclean sandy beaches for swimming and sunbathing. Conde Nast Traveler magazine included Presque Isle in its list of "Top 100" U.S. swimming holes. Sailors also enjoy the waters, putting out from Presque Isle Bay to make the best of the Great Lake. But boaters aren't the only ones who enjoy Erie'scrafty pleasures: The city's star attraction is thenewly restored U.S. Brigand Niagara,Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry's famous warship. Astride the decks of this "tallest tall ship" of the Great Lakes, Perry handed the British squadron a decisive defeat in 1813 -- after which he heralded his victory with the now-famous missive, "We have met the enemy and they are ours..."
