Situated inland, away from the sea, Augusta doesn't offer the sailing, lobstering, whaling and beachcombing usually associated with Maine. But Augusta is surrounded by rivers and lakes, which freeze (and how!), providing opportunities for ice fishing, skating and other brisk activities that the coast can't match. In summer, these same inland waters are avenues for whitewater rafting and traditional fishing. The Maine state capital sits on both sides of the Kennebec River about 50 miles northeast of Portland. This small town (pop. 22,000) depends on state government for a major share of its economic base. Attractions include the state capitol, designed by famous American architect Charles Bulfinch and completed in 1832, the governor's mansion, Blaine House, and the Maine State Museum. Augusta is also a college town, home of the University of Maine. Other museums, parks and events in the nearby towns offer additional opportunities for fun and sightseeing.
