Taiyuan is the capital of northeast China's Shanxi (not to be confused with Shaanxi) Province. Its strategic location on the Loess Plateau made Taiyuan the site of battles and fires that ruined the city more than once over the course of its 2,400 year history. Then Industrial Age marauders discovered that the Taiyuan Basin features the world's richest deposites of coal and iron ore.
