Timisoara lit a fuse for the Romanian Revolution. On December 20, 1989, Timisoarans took to the streets proclaiming their freedom from the Ceausescu regime, and, following earlier clashes, army troops no longer put up a fight. That populist tide continued to rise, ending over 40 years of Communism in the country. Situated on western Romania's fertile Banat plain, Timisoara is a cosmopolitan city of around 340,000 people. Proximity to Bucharest, Budapest, Belgrade and Vienna is reflected in the multi-national character of Timisoara citizens. Religion and resistance are significant themes in the local history. The 16th century, for instance, saw Timisoara as a rallying point for Christian armies seeking to thwart marauders from the southeast.
