Colombia's second-largest city sits in a high valley of the central mountains. It is the center of the country's textile businesses and is primarily an industrial and commercial area. Colombia is also famous for its coffee, and Medell¡n sits in the middle of the country's coffee-producing region. Coffee remains one of the country's primary legal cash crops. The name Medell¡n, of course, will be forever associated with the cocaine and marijuana cartel of Pablo Escobar, Jorge Luis Ochoa, Gonzalo Rodr¡guez Gacha and Carlos Lehder. These men, through their organization, dominated the illegal Colombian drug trade during the 1980s, but since Escobar's death, control has shifted to the Cali Cartel. The U.S. State Department has a travel warning in effect for Colombia and calls it "one of the most dangerous countries in the world." Its per-capita murder rate of 77.5 murders per 100,000 inhabitants is more than eight times that of the United States.
