Pesaro is the hometown of opera composer Gioacchino Rossini (1792-1868). Rossini left all he had to this city in east-central Italy's Marche Region. That legacy is evident in the local Rossini Museum and the Rossini Theatre, but especially in Europe's second largest music event. The Rossini Opera Festival attracts world famous singers and thousands of music lovers to Pesaro each August. Situated on the Adriatic Sea, Pesaro's cityscape has a medieval center, and becomes increasingly modern the closer you get to the beach. Pesaro is home to around 95,000 people. The local economy is driven by agricultural marketing, a shipyard, plus the manufacture of motorcycle parts and furniture. Moving west in the same province brings us to Urbino. Local cultural appeal is further enhanced by the University of Urbino, offering Italian language courses for visitors in the summer. Tourism is Urbino's main industry, climaxing in early August with the Ducal Fair.
