There were tourists in Bar Harbor before the word "tourist" was invented. Back then, they were called "explorers." Bar Harbor turned 200 years old in 1996 and for much of these last two centuries, this pristine island town off the Maine coast has subsisted largely on vacationers hungry for fish and fresh ocean air. The first "tourists" docked their yachts in Bar Harbor in the 1820s and 1830s. The naked granite mountains overlooking the tiny town were too much for any rugged, outdoors adventurer to pass up. It's fitting that back then the town was actually named "Eden," though everyone called it "Bar Harbor." Not until 1916 did the town make the colloquial name official. Today, Bar Harbor prides itself as a tourist haven, dotted with quaint and sometimes majestic old hotels overlooking the crisp, northern Atlantic waters. Other than tourists, Bar Harbor offers the world -- mice! No, the town's not infested. Bar Harbor is home to Jackson Laboratories, the world's largest mouse research facility. Must be some four-footed ancestors of the rodent stowaways on those first "tourist" ships.
