Coimbra is the Portuguese equivalent of Italy's Pisa or Germany's Heidelberg, a city put on the map by the ancient Coimbra University. The university, one of the oldest in Europe was founded in Lisbon in 1290 and moved to Coimbra in 1537. Visitors are advised to take a long look around the ancient buildings clustered on a steep hill with a magnificent view of the city. Walk through the venerable iron gate and see the enormous and fascinating historical Baroque-styled University Library as well as the university's huge Baroque clock tower, which has been dominating the skyline since the eighteenth century. Some of the students still wear their picturesque academic black suits and capes, pinned with a colorful ribbon indicating the student's course of study. The presence of so many students guarantees a college-town atmosphere like that of any other university town, with plenty of traditional coffeehouses and spots to enjoy a cool beer. The best time to visit the university is in May when the students celebrate the end of the academic year in the Queima das Fitas, joyously tearing and burning their gowns and faculty ribbons. This is when you're most likely to hear the Coimbra fado, distinguished from the Lisbon version by its mournful pace and romantic lyrics sung to the accompaniment of a traditional 12-string Coimbra guitar. The Mondego River crosses Coimbra, a river found so frequently haunting Portuguese literature that it is also known as "The River of Poets." Being the a city of learning through history, Coimbra is associated with Portugal's most important religious, artistic, intellectual and political figures more than any other Portuguese city.
