The Zulu name for Durban is Thekwini, or "the place where the earth and the ocean meet." It's an apt name, given life in this coastal metropolis of 2.6 million revolves along the shoreline, whether it's the resort hotels, shops and tourist magnets of the Golden Mile or the locals basting on the beaches or catching the waves rolling in off the Indian Ocean. It's said Durban is much more an African city than South Africa's other major centres. It's very multi-racial - full of bustling marketplaces, exotic smells and wares, mosques and temples. And parked along the KwaZulu-Natal coast, it's steambath hot and sticky. The city - populated by Zulus, Indians and whites - is geared around the endless recreational opportunity of the beachfront, but it's also a busy port and has been since the days Europeans landed, looking to trade in skins and ivory. It's also a jumping off point for some of South Africa's best natural attractions. A drive inland takes visitors to the stunning Drakensberg Mountains, or to the game reserves of the Zulu homelands. And up the Dolphin Coast is Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park.
