Local legend has it that the Easton public library, built on a cemetary, is haunted. Halloween must be a good scare around here. Christmas is also observed in a big way, when the world's largest artificial candle (as listed in the Guinness Book of World Records) is erected in the town's center square. Easton sits in the heart of Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley, overlooking the Delaware River. The city's 26,000 residents are proud to play host to Binney & Smith (makers of Crayola Crayons) as well as students at Lafayette College, a school founded by local residents in 1826 and named after Marquis de Lafayette, French hero of the American Revolution. Across the river is Phillipsburg, New Jersey, and the annual Easton - Phillipsburg football game stirs up quite a bit of cross-state rivalry. Downtown, one of Easton's oldest buildings, the Jacob Bachmann Tavern, is currently undergoing restoration under the direction of a Lafayette engineering professor. The tavern was once owned by George Taylor, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and somehow the building has stood since 1752.
