One of Europe’s most modern cities, Frankfurt is Germany’s financial center and home of the European Central Bank. Although it was founded as a Roman settlement and was later a seat of the Holy Roman Empire, little remains of Frankfurt’s historic city center; it was destroyed by Allied bombing in World War II and has been rebuilt as a dense forest of skyscrapers. Also damaged but reconstructed, Saint Bartholomew's Cathedral is Frankfurt’s main historic landmark, the church where kings and emperors were crowned beginning in 1356. More than 20 museums share the Museumsufer (Museum Embankment), a park-like area along the banks of the River Main, including the Städel, containing one of Germany’s top collections of Old Masters.
