A resort city attracting travelers for day trips to Lake Baikal -- "The Pearl of Siberia" -- and Pribaikal National Park, Irkutsk is one of the most visited cities on the Trans-Siberian Railway. The East Siberia city of 630,000 draws visitors who come not only for the outdoor recreation, but also for the city's old world charms, which include a small but eclectic array of 19th century shops and houses. The city, situated on the Angara River, was founded in 1651 as a Cossack stronghold; most of Irkutsk was destroyed by a fire in 1879, but, with the discovery of gold nearbyless than a decade later, the city was rebuilt in a style so grand that it earned the nickname "The Paris of Siberia." Irkutsk's economy blends industry with tourism, though sometimes the mix is as ill-conceived as oil and water. Years of environmentally destructive manufacturing, suchas that by the Baikal Pulp and Paper Plant (which has endangered the lake's ecosystem), may have provided a livelihood for factory workers, but has threatened the natural attractions that now draw legions of outdoors enthusiasts. Between outings to the lake and park, tourists take time to visit such local landmarks as the restored houses of Decembrist leaders Count Sergei Volkonsky and SergeyTrubetskoy, and the Irkutsk Regional Museum of local history and artifacts. Another draw, the Epiphany Church houses a particularly fine collection of Russian Icons, while those fascinated by the traffic on Lake Baikal enjoy the Museum of Baikal Navigation -- it's housed on an old ice-breaker ship that once ferried Trans-Siberian railcars and passengers across the lake.
