The third-largest city in Sweden with a population of 250,000, Malm? is very much sea-oriented. The city is a major naval and commercial port and boasts the "Ribban," a beautiful white beach 15 minutes from the city center. Crayfish is also something of a craze here. At the Malm? Festival each August, the idea is to eat as many crayfish as possible. The record is 91,500. (No, not by one person; by all festival goers.) There's also a special festival beer to wash down all those crayfish, as well as plenty of music and sporting events. Malm? is at the southern tip of Sweden, just across the ?resund from Copenhagen, Denmark. There are 200 historic castles within an hour of the city, highlighted by 16th-century Malm?hus castle. It now houses Malm?'s museum, with areas on art, nature, local history, and technology and navigation. Not far from Malm? is the beautiful castle Torup. Other local highlights include the Church of St. Peter, filled with artifacts from the 16th and 17th centuries; the St. Gertrud quarter, which consists of buildings from the 16th and 17th centuries; Thottska huset (1558), Malm?'s oldest preserved half-timbered house; Flensburgska huset, an old warehouse in Dutch renaissance style; Rooseum, an exhibition hall in a building that formerly housed the steam turbines of Malm?; and Van?s manor, with a lovely park and sculptor exhibition.
