Depending on the season, it's likely that idle bar chat in Missoula includes what flies are rising, how big the rapids are at Tumbleweed and Fang, or whether there is any powder at the top of Snowbowl. Talk could turn to the New York Times bestseller list, too. We think John Updike may have exaggerated a touch by dubbing it the "Paris of the 90s," but the town does have a high coefficient of writers, who seem to be tired of all the attention. The number of books churning out of this town is impressive, though. Even the outgoing mayor has two titles under his belt. And that's just the tip. The city is an active community. The nation's first Congresswoman, Jeanette Rankin, hailed from Missoula. She helped lead the suffrage movement, then spent the rest of the century working for peace. A rich tradition of advocacy -- now steeped in the environmental movement -- has developed since. People come here and they tend to, well, stay. It's likely that the person pulling your espresso has a master's degree or is a published poet. She's not here for the big salary potential. The unofficial motto: A place. Sort of.
