What do the Gipper, the Studebaker and Lake Effect chocolate have in common? All three legends were born in South Bend, the unofficial capital of the greater Michiana (Michigan-Indiana) area. The Gipper, of course, was a dying Notre Dame football player poignantly portrayed by one Ronnie Reagan in a movie about legendary coach Knute Rockne. Notre Dame football remains the defining component of South Bend, home of the College Football Hall of Fame. The Studebaker wasn't quite legendary as an automobile, but it still rates a museum in the city of its birth. As for the Lake Effect chocolate, well, it comes from the South Bend Chocolate Company, and it at least sounds interesting. (South Bend averages nearly 75 inches of snow per year -- that's where the "lake effect" comes in.) South Bend, pop. 100,000, is an industrial city (paint, machinery, plastics) on the St. Joseph River. It is also a center of higher education, with St. Mary's College and Indiana University-South Bend located there.
