Udine is the capital of Italy's northeast Friuli-Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region. The city of 102,000 people is centrally situated on a wide plain along the Tagliamento River. Not many tourists venture this far past Venice, leaving Udine to its own devices. Folks still speak the Friuliano dialect, and the local cuisine is distinctive. Having developed as a crossroads between south and northeast Europe, Udine continues to be an important freight transport hub. The city served as the Italian army headquarters during World War I. Nowadays, steel, textiles, furniture, and beer brewing are main local industries. Udine's new Hall of Parliament seats the government of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a Region created in the wake of World War II, and given special autonomy due to its complex ethnic makeup and border issues with the former Yugoslavia. On the culture front, the city features the University of Udine, fine art museums, and the Friuli Museum of Folklore and Peasant Traditions. Tourists are drawn to Castle Hill, which looms over Udine, as well as Renaissance monuments in the 16th century Piazza della Liberta.
