Nessie isn't the only famous monster in this Scottish Highland region. Inverness was also home to Macbeth, whose 11th century murder of King Duncan was immortalized in Shakespeare's play. Inverness Castle dominates the local architecture, but Macbeth is believed to have held court east of the city on Crown Hill, where no monuments mark the infamous scene. The unofficial Highland capital, Inverness is home to 50,000 people on Scotland's northeast coast. Once regularly burned by marauding clansman, the city is now a charming gateway to the west. It's situated on the Caledonian Canal, which runs from the North Sea's Moray Firth, through Loch Ness, across the Great Glen, to the Atlantic Ocean. Just south and west of Inverness is Loch Ness, famous for its alleged monster, Nessie. Beyond the hype, however, Loch Ness remains a natural wonder. Twenty-three miles long and a mile wide, it holds more fresh water than lakes of England and Wales combined, and is deeper than the North Sea. Loch Ness mysteries are enhanced by its opaque surface, due to the water's high peat content from surrounding mountains. So too does Loch Ness have its modern monster stories to tell. A popular scientific research site, its waters bear testimony to the atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons and the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.
