Located smack dab in the middle of the state, in the area known as the Crossroads, Alexandria sits between the bustling urban centers of Baton Rouge and New Orleans in the south and Shreveport in the north. Festivals in Alexandria celebrate everything from dogwoods to corn to Indian heritage. Every spring, the city's cochon de lait festival (pig roast) ushers in the warm weather. Other attractions include the art museum, local theater groups and the zoological park. Weekenders hike on the Wild Azalea National Trail, 31 miles of pine woods and hardwood bottom land in Kisatchie National Forest. Nearby Natchitoches, site of the movie Steel Magnolias and home of world-famous meat pies, is a popular day tripper destination. Attractions include Ft. St. Jean Baptiste, the first permanent settlement established in the Louisiana Purchase territory, and the city's 33-block historic district with its more than 50 centuries-old buildings.
