Assisi is a hilltown in central Italy's Umbria Region. Built along the slopes of Mount Subasio, and still surrounded by a protective wall, Assisi is a wonderful, historic witness to the sacred and profane: it's dominated by The Rocca (fortress) in the center of town, as well as medieval churches and basilicas. From a distance, terraced stone houses and buildings give Assisi a rose color, especially in the sun after a rain shower. Assisi is best-known as home to a merchant's son who forsook wealth and privelege for a life of mystic poverty, and became one of history's most inspiring religious figures. That would be St. Francis (1181-1226), who, along with St. Clare of Assisi, founded the Franciscan order of Friars and nuns, still charitably active throughout the world. Home to around 25,000 people, Assisi is visited by thousands of religious pilgrims throughout the year. While accommodations (e.g. hotels) tend to be rather scarce, Assisi offers a wealth of art laden museums and churches. The nearby Basilica Di Santa Maria Degli Angeli, for instance, envelopes the cell where St. Francis died, as well as the humble Porziuncola chapel, considered the birthplace of Franciscanism. The Umbrian countryside around Assisi is also appealing, with olive groves and vineyards mixed in among grain, sugar beet, potato, and tobacco fields.
