Baton Rouge is the heart of plantation country. Just a short drive from town along the famous River Road stand many restored antebellum mansions, gracefully perched near the river like flowers in a large bouquet. The river, of course, is the Mississippi, which flows past Louisiana's capital city, wide and strong, but deceptively placid in appearance. And the name, Baton Rouge? It means "red stick," and reputedly refers to the method once used to mark the boundary between two Indian tribes. To many Louisiana residents, Baton Rouge is LSU. The premiere state university calls this city home and its sports teams -- especially football and basketball -- inspire rabid loyalty among its purple-and-gold clad fans. Baton Rouge is also home to the state's largest African American university, Southern, whose Jaguars also have hordes of cheering fans. Attractions in Baton Rouge are numerous and varied, including the Old State Capitol building, a Gothic revival palace built in 1849 that Mark Twain called the "ugliest" building on the Mississippi. Now, it's "historic."
