Boise (that's boy-see) takes its name from French explorers who, after trudging through the Idaho desert, came upon forest and trees near present-day Boise. Gold miners followed the French in the late 1800s and the city was named the state capital shortly thereafter. In the 1930s, Basque people immigrated from the Western Pyrenees, and their colorful culture still permeates the area. It's a city where high tech industry meets foresters and government suits: the governor, Hewlett Packard, Micron and Boise Cascade all make a home here. And it's no wonder they do. Boise is low in elevation, making it a mild place to live, but sits at the edge of the Rockies, making it a terrific place to play. You can day ski just outside of town or spend the weekend over in Sun Valley (to the east). Hikers have their choice of trails in the nearby Sawtooth National Forest or in the massive wilderness areas to the north. And real whitewater churns nearby: river rats can run rapids on day trips or week-long ventures through wilderness areas.
