Les meilleurs hôtels à Beppu

The big reason to go to Beppu is to go to hell. And for nearly 12 million annual visitors that's the only reason. The hells are actually hot springs, caused by the incredible thinness of the earth's crust at Beppu, which is located on the northern coast of Kyushu in Oita prefecture. There are nine separate springs that the Japanese have nicknamed jigoku, or hell, and all are remarkably different from one another. There's Tatsumaki Jigoku, or Tornado Hell, a geyser which shoots out a stream of hot water every 25 minutes. There's Chinoike Jigoku, or Blood Pool Hell, with scarlet red waters, reputed to be an excellent treatment for skin ailments. Umi Jigoku, the largest of the springs, is colored a deep, lurid green. Adding to this surreal setting are large and unusual tropical plants, all thriving in the warm, moist soil. Of course with all these hot springs, you'd expect a couple of good bath houses, or oshen, around town. And in fact, there are many. The most famous is the Takegawara, a 19th-century establishment, where you can be packed up to your neck in steaming black sand. There are also falling-water hot springs, bubbling hot springs, and your every-day spas. Many of the inns have their own oshen, and some inns even have cooking facilities powered up by the springs. Choosing an oshen can be overwhelming, since there are so many of them. But with so many establishments offering very similar services, it's hard to go wrong with any of them. Beppu is often described as the Las Vegas of Japan, and it's a kitchy place with a monkey park, tourist stands laden with souvenirs, and even a sex museum.
