Dar es Salaam, which means "haven of peace" in Arabic, was a modest fishing village until the German colonial government moved the capital here in 1891. Now it is a city of 1.5 million that is the focus of Tanzania's political, cultural and commercial activities. Although Dodoma was declared Tanzania's capital in 1974, most government functions remain in Dar es Salaam, a port city on the Indian Ocean. In addition to having the nation's busiest port, it also is the starting point of the Central Line railroad and site of an international airport. Educational institutes include the University of Dar es Salaam and the Ardhi Institute. Among the other highlights are the National Museum of Tanzania, the Kariakoo Market, Mnazi Mmoja Park and Nyumba Ya Sanaa (House of Art). Just across the bay is the island of Zanzibar, which merged with Tanganyika in 1964 to form Tanzania. Zanzibar was the commercial center of East Africa during the spice- and slave-trading period of the 19th century. Attractions there now include the white beaches, the ancient Stone Town and the Zanzibar Government Museum.
