In the scenic Dun Valley, on the watershed of India's two sacred rivers - the Ganga and Yamuna - Dehra Dun is a synthesis of the old and new, a modern educational center and an area cloaked in history and legend. Tapovan is an ancient pilgrimage spot where legend says that Dronacharya - great guru of the heroes of the "Mahabharata" - performed penance. Another holy spot is the Tapkeshwa Mahadev, a cave shrine dedicated to Lord Shiva. According to a story from the "Mahabharata," the god Shiva made milk flow from this cave for the son of guru Dornacharya. On a more secular note, the Rajaji National Park is only 20 kilometers from the city. The lands of this managed nature preserve in the Himalayan foothills are primarily forested and provide homes for several species of mammals and birds. Before independence was won from Britain, Jawaharlal Nehru - India's first prime minister and the father of Indira Gandi - was imprisoned in Dehra Dun four times by the British during the freedom struggle. The barracks in which he was incarcerated is still standing. A board gives the dates of his imprisonments, and some of the roses he planted within the prison walls still bloom in silent testimony.
