The islands of Caicos and Turks are a geologic extension of The Bahamas but are independent British Overseas Territories. Made up of about 300 islands (only eight are developed), the Turks and Caicos are known for relaxed luxury beach resorts and superb diving -- the islands are part of extensive coral reefs, and Jacques Cousteau considered these eerily turquoise waters to be some of the world’s best diving spots, particularly the mile-deep undersea Wall off Grand Turk. Snorkelers can explore trails through coral forests at Bight Reef. The islands’ seafood specialty is conch, best enjoyed from a beach-side shack and eaten in the shade of a palm tree.
It is hot, dry and distinctly Southwestern. Tucson was once governed by our neighbor to the south (it is just 65 miles north of Mexico), and it has been inhabited by humans for thousands of years. Today, it is a blend of Anglos, Hispanics and Native Americans (the Tohono O'odham, or Papago, Indian Reservation is just outside of town). Although stripmalls ring the city, visitors can still find a bit of the old Southwest in Tucson's downtown. The Hotel Congress was built in 1919 and is restored to its original condition. The outlaw John Dillinger was caught here. Even in the city limits, there's no question that you're in the Sonoran desert -- much of the city keeps its desert feel. Many homes and businesses opt for native vegetation over water-hungry lawns. And despite the dry conditions (12 inches of rain a year), the area is creepin' with critters. More species of hummingbirds are here than anywhere else in the country; scorpions and snakes are common; and the majestic saguaro cacti grace the landscape. The Saguaro National Monument and Organ Pipe National Monument are both nearby. Tucson is a college town, too. The University of Arizona lends a touch of youth, culture and home-team spirit to the city.
