Trieste is in Italy, but it doesn't feel "Italian." The city's tumultuous history has resulted in an ongoing identity crisis. Situated in far northeastern Italy on the Adriatic Gulf of Trieste, and home to 230,000 people, Trieste is the largest city in Italy's Friuli-Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region. Within sight around Trieste are the hills of neighboring Slovenia, and Slavic is a common language on the streets. Austrian influences are prevelant, too, especially in the architecture, Trieste having served as the Hapsburg Empire's prime Adriatic port. Ownership of Trieste was in dispute until 1954, when Yugoslavia gave it back to Italy. Tensions between Slavs and Italians still run high, spurred by a flood of refugees to Trieste from the Bosnian war. Still an active port, Trieste is economically driven by the shipping trades, as well as petro-chemical, metallurgy, and paper industries. Tourists are drawn to Trieste's hill of San Guisto, featuring ruins of a Roman forum, a cathedral, and castle. Karst caves and landscapes highlight nearby natural attractions. And Trieste boasts an expatriate literary tradition, as the likes of James Joyce and Rainer Maria Rilke spent time living and working here.
