So you think Washington, D.C. was the first capital of the US? OK, then somewhere in Virginia, maybe? Nope. The answer is York, Pennsylvania, where the Articles of Confederation were drafted and adopted in 1777-1778. Yup, it's a bit of a history lesson, but it defines the city even at the dawn of the 21st century. And it's the primary source of York's thriving tourist industry. Visitors can experience historical York at the restored Gates' House, Plough Tavern, the Historical Society Museum and Colonial Court House. Colonial Valley features a 229-year-old grist mill, schoolhouse, farmer's market and old brick-end barns. In the Historical Society building, visitors will find a reconstruction of a colonial York street scene, complete with an historical library, exhibits, antiques and Native American artifacts. After a day exploring colonial York, the Gingerbread Man and The First Capital Dispensing Co. are perfect for a meal or just hanging out. Once you've steeped yourself in enough history, head north to the town of Hershey (the name says it all) to take the Hershey's Chocolate World tour.
