Les meilleurs hôtels à Samara

On the eastern bank of the Volga River, about midway along the river's reach, Samara is a popular resort city known for its clear waters and sandy beaches. Perhaps that's why so many students choose to attend school here -- among the city's higher learning institutions are Samara State University, Marina Nayanova University, Samara StateAcademy of Architecture and Civil Engineering, Samara State Aerospace University, and the Samara State Technical University. Samara, which was known as Kuibyshev from 1935 until 1991, is named for the Samara River, which meets the Volga River at this spot. The strategic convergence gave birth tothe city, which was founded as a fortress in 1586. It eventually turned from a defensive port to a trading and agricultural center. During World War II, the city attracted diplomats, artisans and industrialists seeking refuge from the encroaching war -- so much of the nation's talent relocated here that Kuibyshev became known as the USSR's "Second Capital" during the war. A cosmopolitan city, Samara is rich in unusual "merchant" architecture, its buildings an eclectic blend of Empire, Gothic and Modern styles. The domes, steeples and arches ofSamara's churches are visual landmarks as well -- among them, the only Polish Roman Catholic church in the Volga area. This section of the Volga River has long inspired painters; among the artists whose canvases captured the landscape were Russia's most renowned Realist, Ilia Repin, and the great seascape painter Ivan Ayvazovsky. Literary legends, too, have called Samara home: Aleksander Tolstoy spent his childhood here, and Maxim Gorky experienced one of his most prolific periods while living in Samara.
