Les meilleurs hôtels à Srinagar

The state officially known as Jammu-Kashmir embraces the foothills and peaks of the Indian Himalayas. Its three regions, Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, offer astounding beauty and a glimpse into the crossroads of Asia's three main cultures: Hinduism, Islam and Buddhism. Unfortunately, however, the state has been the key to a border dispute between India and Pakistan and, consequently, large segments of the region are off-limits to travelers. Along the banks of the Tawi river, the predominately Hindu city of Jammu is the state's winter capital. The city houses a cluster of temples and shrines, some dating from as early as the 9th century. Significant landmarks include the Amar Mahal Palace and the Ranbireshwar Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir, is predominately Muslim. Divided by the river Jhelum, criss-crossed by canals and bridges and dotted with lakes and floating gardens, Srinagar has inevitably been dubbed the Venice of the east. Landmarks include the Shalimar Bagh garden, with its fountains and flowering trees; Hazratbal Mosque, an important Muslim shrine; the Amarnath cave, a sacred Hindu shrine, and the great Shankaracharya temple. Deep within the folds of the Karakoram mountain range in the northern tip of Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, known as the last Shangri-la, is an otherworldly place of arid, alpine vistas and ancient temples clinging to sheer rock walls. Closed to the outside world until the mid-1970s, Ladakh's Indo-Tibetan culture flourished undisturbed for thousands of years. Its main city, Leh, was once an important post on the old caravan silk route from China.
