Home of China's largest automobile plant and the country's main film studio, many have likened Changchun to Detroit and Hollywood. Changchun's main historic draw, however, is the Puppet Emporer's Palace and Exhibition Hall. It was the 14 year home-in-exile for the Chinese Emporer, Henri Puyi -- subject of the Academy Award winning film "The Last Emporer." Changchun was largely developed during the 20th century, first by Japanese militarists -- as capital of their Manchukuo puppet state from 1933-1945 -- and then by Chinese Communists, as a northeastern industrial center and capital of Jilin Province. Jilin Province is China's largest exporter of ginseng and sable fur. Meanwhile, its eastern Chanbaishan (or White Mountain) Forest and Nature Reserve features tigers, deer, and even a mythical monster, amid its wealth of flora and fauna.
