Les meilleurs hôtels à Kazan

Kazan, meaning "cauldron" in Tatar, is aptly named, for the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan has often bubbled with turmoil. An important Volga River region city, Kazanhas long played the role of an ethnic and political outsider deep within the Russian empire. Once a capital of the Golden Horde, Kazan dates back to the 13th century; to this day, its population of 1.1 million is made up almost equally of Tatars (a people most famous for its invading leader, Genghis Khan), and Russians. Ivan the Terrible drove the horde from the city in 1552 and established the Russian Orthodox church as the official (then) religion. The city was destroyed again during an 18th century revolt. Tatar culture still permeates Kazan, from the political power of the Tatarstan nationalists and the numerous muslim mosques, to such local attractions as the Tatar Folk Art Museum and the Tatarstan Regional History Museum. The Soviets gave Kazan a bit of leash by establishing the Tatarstan Autonomous Republic. But Tatarstan's true bid for independence, announced in 1990 -- before the fallof Communism -- was a pill so bitter for Moscow to swallow that Kazan soon found itself in the all-too-familiar battle to break away from deep within the Mother Russia. Perhaps this inherent contradiction -- geography vs. populace, Christian vs. Muslim -- contributed to the creative development of Leo Tolstoy, who studied in Kazan. "War and Peace" could as easily describe the history of this city as it does the famous Russian epic novel he wrote. Another local student, Vladimir Lenin, was allegedly expelled from Kazan University for his extreme politics.
