Cali, located in the southwest, is Colombia's third largest city and the center of the country's principal sugar producing region. It boasts few tourist attractions, but has its share of colonial churches -- particularly the grandiose La Ermita -- and museums dedicated to archeological artifacts and Hispanic relics. On the cultural side, the Galer¡a Arte Moderno has hosted several exhibitions by Colombian painter Karen Lamassonne, and the artist has an entire series of paintings -- "Homenaje a Cali" -- that depict a dreamy, erotic vision of the city. Cali has, of course, also been associated with the drug trade. Once cocaine czar Pablo Ecobar departed this life and the domination of his Medell¡n Cartel was broken, control of Colombia's lucrative drug exportation business shifted to Cali. In addition to the drug lords, several paramilitary groups on both sides of the political spectrum and right-wing death squads operate throughout the country, executing "undesirables," kidnapping tourists and executives, and bombing pipelines and banks.
