Cologne (also known as cologne water and eau de cologne) has indeed been made here since the beginning of the 18th century and remains a major industry in the area. The name, however, is actually a French name for the German city of Koln (Americans also call the city by the name of Cologne). This is the largest city (pop. 937,000) in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and is the cultural capital of the Rhineland. Situated on the left bank of the Rhine River, it is in western Germany tucked between fellow Rhine cities Bonn and Dusseldorf. It dates to the first century B.C., when Roman invaders colonized it. The Franks and Prussians both ruled the city at one time. Despite considerable damage during World War II, many historic buildings remain. The Cologne Cathedral, standing on the site of a church completed in 873, is the largest Gothic church in northern Europe and houses art treasures that span more than a millennium. Other buildings well worth seeing are the 15th-century Festhaus, the Gothic town hall and a 16th-century arsenal. The many museums include the Wallraf-Richartz-Museum, the largest art gallery in the Rhineland, as well as a museum on the history of eau de cologne. Besides cologne, other products important to the local economy are wine, chocolate, textiles and engines.
