Founded in 25 B.C. by Roman Emporer Augustus, Aosta is the capital of Italy's far northwest Valle d'Aosta Region. The city has been called Rome of the Alps, and an ancient fortifying wall surrounds the town. Walkers will love Aosta, as no cars are allowed in the city. Walks should be taken to the Roman ruins, the Convent of San Giuseppe, and the charming arched bridge over the Buthier River. The walk should be rewarded with fondue, a specialty of the local cuisine. During the Middle Ages, Aosta was a European crossroads, considered the capital of the Alps. Situated at the foot of towering Mount Emilius, the city makes a great base for skiers and hikers. Indeed, tourism is a main Aosta industry, while iron, food processing, publishing, and woodworking spur the local economy as well. Though Valle d'Aosta is the smallest Italian region, it's surrounded by Europe's four highest mountains. Visitors come to the area from France and Switzerland, respectively, via the Mont Blanc and Great St. Bernard Tunnels. Despite its charm, with over 100 castles, and recreational wealth, Valle d'Aosta remains off the beaten path relative to other European alpine venues. That's maybe how the region's 116,000 inhabitants like it, too, as their independent spirit is respected by the Italian government, which grants Valle d'Aosta special autonomy.
