Known in the native language as "green city," Hohhot is the capital of China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. "Green" refers to the fact that the city appears as an oasis on the vast Tumuochuan Plain -- a grassland desert. Hohhot is said to have been built 400 years ago by a Mongol clan led by a decendant of Genghis Kahn. West of Hohhot, and also situated along the Huanghe (Yellow) River, is Inner Mongolia's other main city, Baotou. A railroad hub and agricultural market center, Baotou is rich in iron ore and coal deposites, fueling a thriving local steel industry. Inner Mongolia has only been part of China since the Nationalist Revolution of 1911, and unhappily so for many native and expatriate Mongols. Separatist sentiments prevail in the region, despite crackdowns by the Chinese government. Lamaism (a Buddhist sect) is the traditional religion in Hohot and Baotou. Five Pagoda Temple and Guangjue Temple, respectively, are popular local attractions. Only hardy tourists, however, are advised to visit this region, but they're rewarded with the chance to experience life in a nomadic Yurt Camp, to ride camels, and cook mutton.
