Bradford has more curry houses than New Delhi! Or so it's been claimed, and exaggeration or not, that's evidence of the cultural diversity that characterizes this West Yorkshire city and district. Historically one of the world's leading textile trade hubs, immigrants from Germany, East Europe and Asia were lured to Bradford by the promise of jobs, and continue to define its modern culture. Bradford's location about two-thirds to the north of England (roughly halfway east to west) place it within an hour of Leeds, York, Manchester and Sheffield. Then again, with a major university and some 480,000 residents, Bradford is also one of Britain's 10 largest cities. Its tourist attractions include the National Museum of Photography, Film, and Television. It's said you can easily walk from the Bradford city centre into the countryside. Those surroundings feature splendid moorlands and the Yorkshire Dales, made famous by the literary Bronte family of Hayworth. Ilkley, the Parish of Utley, and its big brother Keighley (northwest of Bradford) also have their prosperous heritage in the textile industry. Yet, the annual Keighley Beer Festival and Ilkley Concert Club indicate that Bradford folk aren't all about work and no play.
