Newfoundland's second city owes much of its livelihood to the pulp and paper mill that dominates the cityscape, but there's much more to talk about here. Located on the western edge of the island - or The Rock as it's affectionately known - the Corner Brook-Deer Lake area is the business and educational centre for a region blessed with natural scenery, abundant resources and ancient history. The granite hills that surround the valley town offer great rock climbing and some of the best, most reliable skiing in eastern Canada, at Marble Mountain. The Humber River offers world-class Atlantic salmon fishing. And there is good cycling, camping and hiking at such places as Blow Me Down Provincial Park and nearby Gros Morne National Park. A regional college and connections to Memorial University offer not only academic facilities, but the arts. And Western Newfoundlanders - legendary partiers - crank it up for such Corner Brook events as the annual winter carnival and a traditional folk and cultural festival each summer. Corner Brook is also a gateway to such historical sites as the Port au Choix native-Inuit settlement and burial grounds and the L'Anse Aux Meadows viking encampment, at the end of what's called the Viking Trail.
