Montana Tech of the University of Montana in Butte is home to the Montana Tech Mining Team, which frequently cleans up at the annual International Collegiate Mining Competition. There, competitors dig it in Gold Panning, Mucking, Swede Sawing, Surveying, and Jackleg Drilling events. The team has plenty of room to practice: Some 40 miles of vertical shafts and 2,600 miles of tunnels stripe the Butte area down under. Above ground, outdoors enthusiasts enjoy such diversions as camping, hiking, mountain biking and skiing at the Highlands, just south of Butte, and water sports at Delmoe Lake, near the top of Homestake Pass along Interstate 90. And for top-notch trout fishing, casting crews (including the Montana Tech Fly-Fishing Club) are hooked on the piscine pleasures of nearby Big Hole River.
