This northern beach town of Goa has gone through some major renovations: hotels have been spruced up, and resorts have opened. Package tours pull in more and more frequently, and Goa is a major holiday destination for both Indians and foreigners. As for beaches, Calangute's stretch of sand doesn't have the swaying palms found in other parts of Goa. Its coastline also falls abruptly into the sea. But the further north you go, the better the beaches get. Just two miles north of Calangute is Baga, where you'll find quieter beaches and wider expanses of sand all shaded by those famous palms. Calangute may not have the best beach, but it still has atmosphere, most of which is found at the numerous cafes and bars along the beaches. Calangute is also an excellent place to eat cheaply, and if you're into seafood you can try a whole number of interesting dishes: tandoori shark, grilled kingfish, prawns vindaloo. For the homesick Western tourist, a few cafes serve up everything from spaghetti and meatballs to pancakes and apple pie. Not surprisingly, Calangute's popularity among tourists has brought a large number of merchants and traders plying their goods. Most of the merchants come from Kashmir, bringing with them Kashmiri carpets, and Tibetan and Rajhastani arts and crafts. The quality can vary; and most of the goods are not inexpensive. Make sure to bargain.
