Chelyabinsk, the capital of the Southern Ural region, has, sadly, gained most of its modern fame from its misfortune. The surrounding area has been bombarded by a pair of nuclear disasters, both of which were covered up by the Soviet government. The first episode actually lasted a decade, when, beginning in 1951, the nearby Mayak weapons plant began dumping waste from nuclear bomb production into a small lake. The lake evaporated, leaving behind a still-deadly dose of radioactive dust. In 1957, a failure in the nuclear waste cooling system at the Kyshtym plant spewed at least 70 tons of radioactive material into the immediate area. The code of silence about these events created a bitter legacy for the city of 1.2 million and the mountainous region, most evident to visitors who take the nuclear "safety" tour arranged by Intourist, which features, among other highlights, a visit to a treatment center for victims of radiation poisoning. Since the fall of Communism, the truth about the tragedy of the Southern Urals has come to light, and concerted environmental clean-up efforts are underway. Chelyabinsk, which evolved into a trading center after it was founded as a fortress in 1736, is a major industrial center, with factories turning out military equipment and metal parts. Beyond the chilling nuclear tour, visitors can also view more serene sights, including the Applied Art Museum, the Geology Museum, and the magical Victor Plotnikov Theater.
