You probably don't know it, but if you're planning to visit Japan, the first place you'll see is Chiba. Narita International Airport -- the main airport serving Tokyo -- is located not in Tokyo proper, but in the neighboring prefecture of Chiba, in a town called, logically enough, Narita. Housing costs in Chiba are far less than in Tokyo, perhaps the world's most expensive city. The commute is about an hour or two by train, depending on where in Chiba Prefecture you're coming from. But that's standard for Japanese salarymen (a Japanglish term referring to Japanese corporate middle managers). Many foreigners employed as English teachers in Tokyo choose to settle out in Chiba. In exchange for saving money (and living away from Tokyo's frenzied bustle) they get a lot of reading done on the train. If you're landing in Narita only to hop on one of the express trains to Tokyo, at least take a look out the windowpanes as you speed away from here. Chiba is plush with forests and greenery, something not easy to come by in the big city.
