Millions of Catholics worldwide know the name Fatima, one of the most visited pilgrimage destinations in the world and the site of a miraculous happening in 1915. In that year, three humble peasant children were allegedly visited by a series of angels and finally the Virgin Mary. The three girls first saw the apparitions while saying the rosary after lunch and saw several more angelic visions before the Blessed Virgin Mary arrived. On Sunday, May 13, 1917, in a world caught up in World War I, the children of Fatima received their first sighting of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A bright beam of light pierced the air, and they beheld a vision of a beautiful lady dressed in white. The lady spoke to them gently, telling them not to fear her presence, but to return every month on the thirteenth day at the same hour ro receive the prophecies. Though frightened, the children did as she asked, and the apparition of Mary revealed many messages and secrets to them, known today as the Secrets of Fatima. The first was a message of peace and a vision of Hell, with anguished, charred souls drowning in an ocean of fire. The second had an anti-Communist bent, with a prophesy that Russia would "spread her errors through the world, causing wars and persecution against the Church." The third secret has never been divulged -- it lies in a drawer in the Vatican, read by each succeeding Pope but supposedly too dreadful to be revealed. To commemorate these amazing events, a vast white chapel, Shrine of Fatima and gigantic esplanade have been built to hold the crowds of 100,000 who flock here for the main pilgrimages on May 12-13 and October 12-13. The tombs of Jacinta and Francisco, two of the witnesses to the visions, also get plenty of attention during the midnight processions of pilgrims.
