That's what you get for being so close to the Arctic Circle. It is a young city, founded in 1903 during the interior's gold rush. It's likely you'll need a guide, too: you can't get to most places by roads. Fairbanks is deep in Alaska's interior; its surroundings are still truly wild, exhilarating and foreboding.
