The first white man said to arrive at the junction of the Athabasca and Clearwater Rivers noticed the natives using a heavy tar dug from the ground to waterproof their canoes. It took nearly two centuries before a company set up to capitalize on the black goo, but when it happened, it changed Fort McMurray forever. It was little more than a small town, most of its residents hunting, fishing and trapping for a living, when Great Canadian Oil Sands started building a plant that would refine the raw bitumen into highly marketable oil. Another company followed, and by the 1970s, as global oil prices soared, the boom was on and the little town became a fast-growing city full of new homes, services and young faces there for the big wages the plants were handing out. The boom inevitably ended, but oilsands production remains a viable industry, employing thousands of locals. They enjoy a city with a thoroughly modern infrastructure and access to forests, lakes, beaches and other natural attractions of Northern Alberta.
