There's a genteel air about New Brunswick's capital. An hour inland from the sea, Fredericton is a place of trees, parks, river walkways and history - dominated by government and academia (there are two universities), rather than industry and commerce. The arts play a large role in the city, known as the Pewtersmith Capital of Canada but also as the home of the Beaverbrook Gallery, a gift of New Brunswick native son Lord Beaverbrook. The newspaper tycoon bestowed the city with a gallery that includes the works of Dali, Constable, Turner, Gainsborough, Reynolds, the Canadian Group of Seven and Cornelius Krieghoff. More hard-nosed residents are meanwhile blessed with top-notch hockey - the AHL farm team of the famed Montreal Canadiens skates here. The government makes much of New Brunswick's official bilingualism. Like much of New Brunswick the deepest roots trace back to Acadians, but the city grew up as a colonial home to Empire loyalists, particularly in the wake of the American revolution.
