Fur trader Michael Menerd paid $50,000 for this 7-square-mile island plot overlooking the Gulf of Mexico in 1836. In today's market, you'll need a lot more than that to live in one of the Victorians on the beautiful oak-lined east end of town. That's not to say that anyone can't partake in this unique Texas spin on island life, however. Tourism rides the crest of the economic wave here, with pale Midwesterners making a near year-round conga line for Galveston Island's heat, sunshine and 32 miles of beach. Even in the dead of winter, temperatures range from 50 to 60 degrees (perfect for seashell quests). The bustling island community may be better known now for its beaches and bistros than as "the Wall Street of the Southwest," as it was long ago. But big business still plays a vital role here. Professions in medicine, banking and shipping are embedded in leisurely Galveston culture. And in stark contrast to most U.S. business centers, traffic delays are virtually unheard of. That leaves all the more time for enjoying life's little pleasures, opportunities for which are undeniably intensified here. Perhaps that's why the book "50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family" saw fit to rank Galveston right up there with the best of them.
