Known as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains, Gatlinburg is a year-round resort community of eastern Tennessee, surrounded by the Smokies and national parkland. Each year, millions of travelers come here in search of craftwork, skiing and happy trails to breathtaking views -- all abundant in Gatlinburg. The town proper is fashioned after a quaint Swiss village; the kind of place where there's always a pot of coffee on the burner and a warm glow in the fireplace (hopefully even a few bubbles in the whirlpool). It's a place where an endless array of rustic settings and spectacular sunsets is accented by wildflowers and fantastically colored foliage. The Cherokee people called it "the place of blue smoke" for the bluish mist that often blankets the mountains. With mountains and mist as a backdrop, the town trolley (still only 25 cents a ride) whisks visitors to and from the stores and shops that make up Gatlinburg's well known "crafts loop." Family amusement parks and river rafting adventures add even more to Gatlinburg's distinctive mix of outdoorsy allure.
