Perched on the edge of the French Alps, Grenoble, with its skyscrapers, may seem intimidating by provincial standards. To be sure, it's the region's economic and industrial capital (Xerox even has its own Grenoble visitor's guide), but it doesn't take long to find the French cadre de vie in this bustling city on the Drac and Is?re rivers. Grenoble is home to four universities, numerous museums and the annual Grenoble Jazz Festival, and it was the birthplace of Stendhal, one of the most famous French novelists of the 19th century and still the city's most celebrated citizen. The center of town is marked by the sixteenth-century Palais de Justice in Grenoble's old town on the right bank of the Is?re. It's surrounded by a collection of small squares filled with open markets. Place Grenette, a flower-strewn pedestrian mall lined with a plethora of sidewalk cafes, makes a great place to kick back and enjoy a pastis -- an anise-flavored aperitif -- while people-watching or contemplating the Alpinesque horizon. The most hair-raising excursion in Grenoble is also perhaps the most unbeatable: the cable car ride from the riverside quai St?phane-Jay up to Fort de la Bastille on the steep slopes above the Is?re. The view of the city, the Is?re and the surrounding mountains and valleys are well worth some nail-biting.
