Sure it's a nice place to raise the kids, but in the last couple decades, Indianapolis has quietly shaken off its reputation as a sleepy, farmbelt burg and assumed a proud profile befitting the 12th-largest city in America. This tidy metropolis on the prairie is a magnet for corporate headquarters (Eli Lilly, RCA) and amateur sporting events, and its cultural offerings--including a symphony orchestra and an enormous childrens museum--are world class. Indianapolis has been home to notables ranging from Kurt Vonnegut to David Letterman to Pres. Benjamin Harrison. The Hoosier capital is also proud of its basketball tradition, from the local high-school heroes to the mighty NBA Pacers. Still, when most Americans think of the Circle City, they think of the Indianapolis 500, the Memorial Day auto race that brings the city's traffic to a dead halt (except at the big oval on the west side of town). Equally entertaining diversions are available at downtown's impressively restored Union Station and in the festive nightlife district of Broad Ripple.
