Judging by its neighbors, Joplin is in good company. Tucked in Missouri's southwest corner, Joplin is right next door to Kansas, with Oklahoma just a few miles down Interstate 44 and Arkansas less than an hour down U.S. 71. Just to the east is Joplin's larger neighbor Springfield and to the southeast is Branson, a favorite U.S. tour bus destination, as well as other Ozark Mountain travel stops. Being close to so many places means lots to do for Joplin's 40,000 residents. Drive pretty much in any direction and it won't take long to reach water: there's Table Rock Lake, Stockton Lake and the Great Lake of the Cherokees. Missouri Southern State College is the local alma mater. With its sand-filled turf football field, the school takes its sports seriously.
